Alice in Lockdown

Equating the dream logic of Lewis Carroll with the lived political reality of Covid19.

Alice in Lockdown is a A self-directed illustration project where Zubieta explores the confusion and self transformation journey we have gone through since the beginning of Lockdown.

Bringing vibrant colour to often bleak subjects, Zubieta explores the millennial culture and its issues through pink tinted glasses, neon colours and dreamy characters. Zubieta found in Alice the perfect metaphor to explore the reality she was living in during the outburst of Covid 19.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland represents the child's struggle to survive in the confusing world of adults. To understand our adult world, Alice has to overcome the open-mindedness that is characteristic for children. Apparently, adults need rules to live by. Going down the rabbit hole: in the book is a representation of going into the unconscious, connected with lockdown, Covid-19 seems to be the hole that has trapped us all at home, forcing us to deal with our inner monsters but also with the voice we listen to the most; the mass media.

Alice in Lockdown

Have we gone mad?

Down the habit hole

Descending into this world of picturless control

Scrolling the statistics served by the screen of charts

At least the hedgehogs can now roll free through our empty parks

Why sometimes I’ve disbelieved as many as six explanations to all this before breakfast

Getting curisor and curisor as the days drag on

Curious little oysters aren’t we whilst its’ all convenient for us in our shells.

Hell I even find myself talking to the flowers

Waiting for the usurper to grant us back our powers?

What powers? The one we had to wet to our whistles? whilst they fiddle with our freedoms and plan their next riddles.

Off with their heads!

Off of our heads more like, consume, consume and then go back to bed.

Home comforts

Home? Never alone

There’ll always be the sound their words and the drone.

We’re much too small and they’ve got the key

The Mad Hatter inconveniently invites you to attend the corona party, come come all we must commence with this befuddlement and such it’ll be very very rude indeed if you don’t fall in line and keep your distance at our signs. Oh what delightful entertainment we do have in store, Piccaninnies on their knees, no financial guarantees. Now now everybody at ease and have another cup of tea it’s going to be a bloody breeze. Now dress accordingly as one shall need a mask of their own, everybody shall wear one untold otherwise by somebody not wearing one. Masks can be removed, as and when everybody isn’t. And contrary wise, when wearing said Mask, you shouldn’t if and when everybody else is or there really wouldn’t be a need when one at the party isn’t wearing one, you see?
